Wordle with 5th/6th Grade

I've been working with 5th and 6th graders lately. We are learning to use Edmodo, and it has been tricky to say the least. We have had log in issues - kids forgetting usernames, passwords. Kids who haven't joined my group. It has taken almost half of our class time to actually get everyone logged in! They have been twice to the lab now, and I'm really hoping things are going to go smoothly as we get ready to do Christmas wordles. I knew I wanted to do this activity with the kids, because wordle is such a neat tool. I really struggled with what I would have them do, until I found this TEMPLATE on a website. Thanks so much to the sweet teacher who shared it!  I entered the assignment into Edmodo and had them log in. This took a while. I had a link to the create portion of the wordle website, which is the part we will use. The gallery can have inappropriate things in it, so just be aware. I asked them to enter color words - 5 or 6 - and then play around with changing font, layout, and colors. None of the kids had heard of a word cloud and they loved it!!  It was so exciting to see how exciting it was to them. I printed the template and gave it to them, and also added the template to Edmodo. I went over it and explained that they should complete it so they could finish the assignment. After they complete their wordle I will have them take a screen shot, and paste it into paint. They will then upload the picture to Edmodo, and I will print it for them. They can give it to someone for Christmas. Check back for a link to our gallery. The link will be HERE.

  1. Reflection: the template worked ok. Some of the questions required a phrase for the answer so this didn't work well with the wordle. I think that students needed a much simpler project to complete first. They were not really interested in changing fonts and colors, etc. like I thought they would've been. Many of them wanted to use the black background; next time I will specify it must be white background in order to print. Way too much ink used to print the black background. I will revise the template and post a link soon. Instead of print large size for framing I will print smaller size to be used as an ornament.
