Part of my job is modeling technology infused lessons in classrooms. I'm so lucky our amazing teachers are willing to work with me on this and share their children with me. This morning I'm headed to 1st grade for one of my favorite lessons using the book The Gingerbread Baby. I love to take a book and find ways to create excitement about it using technology! Jan Brett is one my favorite children's book authors and she has amazing support for her books at her website, Jan Brett.com. She has great videos of her talking about how she wrote and illustrated her books and she also has some demonstration videos of how to draw some of her book characters. So, first we will read the book. Then we will watch this VIDEO of her drawing the Gingerbread Baby. The students will follow along and draw their own and color it. When they come to the lab next week, I'm going to record them telling me what they would do if the Gingerbread Baby ran away from their house. I'll take those clips and put them together as a voicethread. At the computers the children will decorate gingerbread cookies online HERE and they will decorate the same gingerbread cottage HERE that is in the story. I will print their cottages for a display outside the computer lab. I will also read the sequel, Gingerbread Friends. The children will be able to take AR quizzes on both books as well. A great reading lesson using technology! I'll post my reflections as a comment, I'll be doing three of these, by the third time I should have a great lesson to share!! Check back for pictures!
