I was so excited to see a tweet from @penguinkids about a new book from author/illustrator Eric Carle. Here is a link to the ARTICLE about the book. And, you get to see what the cover of the book looks like if you scroll down to the bottom! I love Eric Carle!! It is hard to believe that he is 83 years old and still writing and illustrating amazing books. Wow! The Hungary Caterpillar was published in 1969, 44 years ago! It has been in print ever since. What an amazing career he has had. My very favorite book is Brown Bear, Brown Bear, which is actually just illustrated by Carle. I just LOVE that book. It was my son's favorite book. No telling how many times I read it to him over the years! I always used it as my beginning of the year bulletin board for K - I copied all the animals out of the book, enlarged and made copies on colored paper. I sponge-painted the brown bear. Oh, memories! It was so cute! I did so many fun activities with my K students over the years with that book. It was so great because after I read it once or twice, they had a book they could "read" too! It was a great confidence builder for kids as they were learning to read. I even have the big book that was my aunts when she taught, then my moms when she taught, and now mine. One year I did an introduction to K class for our incoming students, and I ordered about 8 copies of the book so the kids could check them out to read at home! They came once a week for a couple of hours and not a week went by that we didn't read Brown Bear. There is even a song that goes with the book. I was over the moon when I found out about it and was able to download it and save to a cd! It doesn't take much for us teachers to be happy, does it? Here is a neat link to an article about the book over at the Book-A-Day Almanac. I even learned a few things about the book that I didn't know. Here is another link to an AMAZING LESSON using technology and Brown Bear over at My Hullaballoo, one of my favorite blogs. There are some great youtube videos of Carle creating his artwork and reading/discussing his books. Here is a link to his BLOG, and here is a link to his MUSEUM. I sure hope I can visit his museum one day! What is your favorite Eric Carle book? Do you have any neat ways you use his books in your classroom? Have you been to his museum? Share by leaving a comment. I LOVE comments! The picture is one a student did during an author study of Eric Carle. We did collage work just like him! Tuesday, February 12, 2013
